Over de kunstenaar

Portfolio tekst.

Lore Stessel’s encounters with dancers and their environment are crucial to her work: she invites them to dance freely in front of her camera in a place and context of their choice; sometimes indoors, mostly outdoors, but always a place where, through them, she comes to discover herself.
In her images, Lore Stessel reconciles three distinct motions: the motion of the photographer highlighting the choice of which moment to capture; the motion of the dancer and the fraction of it that can be captured on film; and finally, the motion of the painter during the developing process, which reintroduces movement to, and to a certain extent coincides with, the still image of it.

Mutual trust throughout these encounters is essential for both photographer and dancer. This creative process takes place within the compelling suspense of time, always accompanied by a deep human awareness of its fleetingness and value.

In the dark room, Lore Stessel manipulates the analog printing process by painting her canvasses beforehand with light-sensitive emulsion and pouring the developer over certain areas of the canvas. Thus, the motion of the painter and that of the photographer meet and influence each other. The result are analog photographs on large format canvasses that have a strong physical impact when displayed.
