"Which studios would you visit?" In a flood of about 1500 studios, making choices can get more difficult. Therefore, not Kunstwerkt, but six participating artists solve the question. The result? An equal amount of routes along studios worth visiting. In this article illustrator Melissa Muys leads you around Anderlecht.
Melissa Muys creates illustrations on wood. Sometimes with watercolour, sometimes with oil paint and just as often with both. She provides the reliefs with a gilded background. She calls herself 'a late bloomer without an academic career path', and therefore enjoys the freedom to experiment and rediscover paths she has already taken. She gives colour to an imaginative world with invented stories, the origins of which can be found in our current society.
Melissa: “Atelier De Naeyer is also worth a visit. Valérie Verloigne works in a figurative way with clay but is equally an accomplished potter. She previously worked on a project about waste, creating a table full of cakes, melting ice creams and nibbled fruit in ceramics. Magnificent! Visitors will also be amazed by the beautiful setting of the studio.”
Melissa: “I was already introduced to Katrijn Jacobs' work during an art tour I organised. Back then, she made a huge drawing on the windows of the administrative centre. She also illustrates children's books and draws with a lot of emotion. These are drawings that make you happy."
Melissa: “During the open studio days, the shared ceramic studio called De Bakkerij will be opened. In my opinion, Katrien Aerts' ceramic works are almost out of fairy tales. You can easily make up a story. She makes surprising new objects every time. I am curious about the new evolution.”
Melissa: “If I did not participate myself, I would definitely take a look at Kinda Rajab in Dendermonde. She is Syrian and several years ago she created illustrations for a beautiful book of poems by a blind compatriot. Her works stand out. She works very intuitively, I feel she also thinks very much out of the box and what's more, her works are accompanied by beautiful stories.”
Melissa: “Finally, I would like to recommend Lies Van Acker's workshop in Grembergen. This lovely lady makes little works that make you happy and she works magic with words, letters and sentences. She has a passion for birds, which are always reflected in her work. She creates on wood, makes beautiful cards, and creates artistic gems from existing books. Very inspiring and ambiance guaranteed!”
During Atelier in Pictures, you can ride Blue-bike for free to visit studios. Take a train into town and then hop on a bike to visit all the studios in the area? Perfect!
