How decisive is your studio for you? With this question, we visited several participants of Atelier in Beeld for our magazine Kunstletters.
Elias Driesen paints, draws, and explores video and performance art. His work focuses on the friction between unconscious experiences, common sense, and nonsense. Elias has a studio in Laken.
Do you have a fixed method in your studio?
I take a cup of coffee and sit in my studio. Usually, nothing changes, but I wait for a moment when I dare to do something. I first have to muster some kind of courage that allows me to create. In my studio, I engage in a constant play. You could compare it to a very slow game of chess. Do I make the first move or does my previous painting suddenly tell me what the next work will be about?
What materials do you prefer to work with?
That varies; I am open to different textures and materials. I am most familiar with paint and pencil. The supports differ from work to work; it could be paper, or even an existing wall where I create an in situ drawing or painting. In recent years, I have also been experimenting a lot with different new mediums like video and performance. Here too, I use my painting and drawing skills to create my own world.
How often do you work in your studio?
Sometimes I stay away for a long time, and sometimes I spend every day there. In the past year, I haven't locked myself up in my studio as much. It started to become a somewhat lonely place. That's also why I started working with video and performances. Collaborating with others appeals to me, creates new perspectives, and gives me the energy to commit to new projects. You don't get that with drawing and painting.
