It's (not) just about your art

At Kunstwerkt, you can find advice on everything related to creating art. On our advice page, you can delve into over 60 articles to enhance your artist practice. Here are a few things that can certainly come in handy for you in preparation for Atelier In Beeld.

How do you select work

Remember that with your art, you are telling a story that you want to share with your visitors. An exhibition - as well as an open studio day - is part of that story, just like your creations themselves. Therefore, it is very important to make a good selection in advance. Dare to seek feedback or assistance from others. Sometimes they see connections in your work that you hadn't noticed yourself, which can lead to an inspiring whole. This is also the job of a curator. Here are some basic principles to consider when selecting your work.

Protecting your work against plagiarism

From the moment you express your work in a perceptible form, such as through a sketch, it is protected under copyright law. An idea or a style is not protected by copyright. Therefore, if you have an idea or concept for a work, no matter how original, it's best to make it concrete and tangible as soon as possible, so that your artwork is indeed copyright protected. Read here how you can further protect your work against plagiarism.

How to write an artist statement

An artist statement is a concise exposition in which an artist clarifies the essence of their artistic vision and intention. It serves as a powerful tool for artists to contextualize their artworks and illuminate their creative process. It provides insights into the artistic choices made, the techniques and materials used, as well as the philosophy, themes, and concepts that inform the work. This enables the audience to develop a deeper appreciation for the artist's work and the process behind its creation. In essence, the artist statement acts as a bridge between the artist and the audience. Wondering how to get started? You'll find out in this article.

Communicating your exhibition

At Atelier In Beeld, you're part of a national media and promotional campaign, but that doesn't mean you can't do more to reach even more people on your own. We asked Fran Bombeke, Head of Communications at Kunstencentrum WIELS, what tips she can share with artists looking to showcase their art to a wider audience. Discover everything she has to say about this topic here.

Photographing your studio

The photography collective Evenbeeld has photographed many projects for Kunstwerkt and regularly showcases artists' studios for Kunstletters. We consulted with them and they shared 10 tips to help you capture your studio beautifully with your smartphone. You can also apply these principles when photographing with a digital camera. Here are all 10 tips.

Selling your work

When you present your work - or in the case of Atelier In Beeld: when people come in - you better be prepared for the question: 'Is this work for sale?' It's best to think in advance about how much you want to ask for your artworks, so you can propose a correct price. You can read here about how to determine the value of your work. Additionally, you need to ensure that you sell your work in a legal manner. You can find out how to do that here.
